Our Story

In Africa, it is told, Bamboula means “to dance, to celebrate” and the Bamboula Ltd. collection of products celebrates African artisans and their traditions.

Welcome to Bamboula’s new website where we celebrate the creativity of skilled African artisans blending authentic traditional forms and contemporary functions.

We are an importer and wholesaler of home and fashion accessories located in Kutztown, PA.  As we start our 30th year, we are expanding our focus on handwoven natural fiber products, especially baskets and totes from the five African countries where we are currently sourcing them, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

We partner with African artisans to design new products for the US market and beyond.  Our mission has always been to create regular work and income for our artisan partners in rural areas in Africa, while assisting them to increase their production capacity, and to build sustainable businesses in their local communities. Most of our artisan partners are women who are also responsible for growing food for their families.  In all of our operations, we are guided by Fair Trade principles.

Jasperdean Kobes, the company’s CEO and owner, developed her passion for Africa while working in Ethiopia and Kenya as a Peace Corps Volunteer and Program Director, respectively.  Before buying the Bamboula in 1989, she worked in various positions to promote economic development in several Africa countries.
